It’s not the civil servants negotiating a bad deal that is a problem it’s more that they are fettered by political interference.
These deals can be done much more effectively as exampled by the Commonwealth games athletics stadium morphing into the City of Manchester Stadium in a comparatively seamless way.

Someone below said government twerp underestimated and also the view that the state is pretty terrible at business negotiations. 1 million percent right. Civil servants always negotiate terrible deals. I can see why newham and London mayor want out. She loves my as it works for us -great

If somehow WHU move out of the OS the stadium would become a total white elephant and the London ratepayers in particular would have been utterly ill served.
Best to sell it to the club so that present or future owners can make it more fan friendly if they so desire.

Maybe them not doing it themselves, but it certainly makes selling the club much more enticing to prospective buyers if we own the ground.

t's not beyond the realms of possibility they've predicted this, and have been putting capital in place for us to be in a position of buying the ground on the cheap and re-developing it.
Oh yeah they'll waste multi millions of their own money knocking it down and starting again... behave... you'd have to be either very stupid or so rich it does not matter

You have to wonder, with our net spend this season and the past couple of seasons being relatively low (compared to other teams on our level), did G&S anticipate this happening?

The real of absurdity to all this is in the solution that’s been chosen to address this problem. The problem is that The State makes for pretty terrible business administrators. That’s been evident for the start of this whole thing. Khan’s response to this is not the logical one, which would be to sell it and get the state out like eventually happened with the O2, it is to solve the problem of too much state by creating yet more state. I don’t think it will work, it will give him a rich vein of soundbites to mine though.

Any Old Iron : I suggested that (somewhere on here!) and was told that he would be in breach of our agreement as not 'football mode'. But I agree with you that this could happen and he would be forcing the club to pay for relocation ... of course we could afford that - certainly once - but Athletics could afford to move back again ! A joke !

And that is both common sense, and pretty much what some people predicted fairly early on in the piece.

Why do you think they moved the seating back after the World Athletics Championship? Because the contract says they have to. And pay for it Not our fault that some government twerp guessed it would cost £300,000 instead of £7m or £8m I see it as a positive as the ludicrousness of paying that every year for 3 days of drug fuelled whippets running in circles will mean that the current situation can’t carry on. And the only solution is to move Athletics to an upgraded Birmingham stadium and give us the chance to make the Pit more like a football stadium.

It's just occurred to me what is going to happen to 'our' ground. Khant wants to renegotiate the deal with the club. In other words he wants more money from us to cover the £10mill a year to move the scaffolding around. But the club ain't going to pay a penny more. So what can Khant do? Not much, but perhaps there's one thing he might have up his sleeve. The next time athletics comes to town perhaps he might decide to wind up E20 and leave all the lower tier in place, forever. Leaving the lower tier permanently miles from the pitch, It saves the taxpayer £10mill p.a. and whoever manages the place can probably get by on the £2.5mill p.a. they get from us. Just a thought.

If you loved being on the North or Southbanks i cannot fathom how the ‘facilities’ of a new stadium would be so important to you now?
It’s a massive contradiction.

The stadium would still be an abortion even if we won the champions league.

In respect of improving the experience they could follow the german model, the Olympic Stadium in Berlin is a similar set up in the middle of nowhere, long walk from the station etc, but on match days there are food vans, beer sellers, players signing stuff for fans, stuff for the kids, a whole host of stuff to do.There is plenty of room at Stratford and no doubt dozens of concessions that would love 50,000+ to ply their wares to, just a thought from a long time lurker that is also totally fucked off and glad he gave up his season ticket
